Lina Puerta
“Lina Puerta makes use of her ceramic sculpture with references to water to create womb-like cavities or appendages. Oftentimes doorways open into passages that evoke a deeply emotional place of the human psyche located in the body yet hidden from view. In the case of her latest series of fountains, ceramic sculptures gurgle with the sound of flowing water, mimicking the fluids circulating in the body and sex. When she places the sculpture in a suitcase it becomes a ready-made object that contains a dream-like arrangement of flowers; its tubular structure resembles both animal and plant. In another exploration of anatomical sensation, Manantial refers to the life-giving properties of the earth, the impulses of the breasts to feed and nourish. The designs scratched onto their surface speak about the respect and value the earth had to the ancient cultures of the Americas. Sumergida sits in a womb-like concave urn with hair and dirt on the breast-like appendages that serve as its base, as if recently lifted from the soil, the blue enamel and a supine figure lying in repose in the center evokes the sensation of protection, regeneration through water, body fluids and sexuality.”
